Hi classmates! I am Khanh Tran! I just want to say that I am not interested in GG because of some reasons. And the most important one is the way of the author describes the story that is so hard to inderstand including in writing. So, whenever I get the book to read, I usually fall asleep after a few pages. However, I know we are not in a low level anymore, the teacher chooses this book to improve us. I expect I would find out some enjoyable feelings in the next chapters.

Hi Christine and everyone, Reading is still hard for me, but I appreciate Christine that she chose interesting topics for hand-out reading material to learn about people who had strong spirit to learn language and culture. It reminds me to study harder to catch up. And... as Tomoko-san recommended, listening to an audio book sounds very helpful for reading faster and for accent reduction. I've never tried before, so I'm very curious about audio books. Thank you and see you later!

Hi, Someone said that the reading technique which we are learning is different from the way she/he have learned in ESL162. I am also confused. But I am feeling that both ways are correct and we may choose either one depending on the purpose. And it depends on how much we can spend the time for readings. Actually I have read the first part (chap1 and2) twice. I read quickly first time and understood the eventsf outline within two chapters, like what happened or who did what etc. And when I read second time, I read slowly and I found that I was getting so many new information from same chapters. Now I am interested in the each personfs characteristic which we did not discussed in a class rather than events. There are so many small descriptions which indicate each personfs character. And I could guess how Yolanda thinks about Sofia, etc. So it is fun to read this story as if I am a sociologist and analyzing each personfs character. I think that I will find whether my analysis is right or not after I finished to read this story.

Hi! After I read Sofia in GG, I could say that I understand her feeling toward her father like as many Asian daughters, girls. The father likes as a symbol for daughter who would like to compare in chosing a future huband. Do you think so?

Hello!! This is Yuri. Actually, before taking this class, I didn't like reading in English. Because reading in English takes too much time and I always have to find the definition of new vocabularys. However, now, I have got more and more interested in reading in English and annotating. um... What about reading some editorials in area that interests us? I think it might be helpful for making us have interested in reading in English as well as improving our reading skills, if we can share the editorials together in the class. Isn't that better than others?^^; Also I wonder what you guys have various ways to improve reading skills that make us read more quickly and catch the points of story well. I really hope that we will have remarkably improved in our English skills in addition to reading skills after finishing this class. Good luck on writing summary about "The Library card." ;D

I also agree with Tomoko about an audio book. When I took ESL116(216) class, It was helpful to practice pronunciation and read the story quickly, and I could see the picture listening to the story.

Hi you guys! I am Khanh. I think most of us do not like GG for some reasons in the first chapters. I really agree with You guys that GG is hard to understand and to be fun. But when I continue to read next, I find out that the novel has something interesting me, and makes me pay attention on it. I want to know how the parents handle their girls problems when the family moves to the US. It is not easy because the girls grow up so fast and they do not belong to where they were. I hope you guys have the same thoughts with me so that you guys can keep going to read the novel for fun.

Hi evryone! I am Khanh Tran. I know all of us are busy and worried for mid-term which is coming up soon. I am also sure some people are stress just like me because I have a problem about vocabulary. Every time I do quizzez, I get confused to fill in the blank, I hardly find the right words even if I understand the definitions clearly. I did talk to Ms. Chai and she gave me a few great ideas. I hope you guys share with me your opinion about that. Thanks! Good luck for quizz.
