What do you consider to be typically "American"? Is it a negative or positive thing to be considered American? Do you desire to be American?

My opinion is ...
Americans are eating sandwiches or hamburgers while they are waiting for the traffic lights to change. I think that it is easy to drop the inside stuff of sandwiches or hamburgers. But they don't care. Is it that Time is Money?
And some Americans are reading newspapers during stopping. Moreover, some Americans' women are making up when they stop on the red light.

Hi everybody
American!! I would like to say .... disappointed. When time to close the shop, even just 1 min late, they don't want anybody get in there. One time, I went to fix my jeans, I talked with the owner and I told him in the US, everything is money, and he asked me do I have job here, because if I had job here, I would know making money here is not too difficult. Most American usually don't think about your feeling, they say whatever they want to say, don't even think whether it embarrass you or not. However American people know how to enjoy their life so much! (It's just my personal opinion)
Thanks Charles

I think americans are very independent people with a kind of distant relationship towards their family. In Europe, people think ( at least among people i have met in Europe) that typical american would be their lack of fashion knowledge: americans tend to wear oversized clothes. I think most americans don't put a lot of emphasis on their appearence - at least not as much as europeans do. Also, americans are workaholics:) and they run in a vicious cirlce...they work hard to make more money, but the more they make the more they spend...so they are never satisfied anyhow. At the oposite side, europeans tend to have a more balanced life- work less hours and take more vacations as well.

I think it is a positive thing to be considered american for several reasons: i think it is true that people are jelous and envy american people ( although i think they are not well informed on this....because in fact americans are so absorbed in their work that they hardly get to travel....i have met lots of americans that never been outside US and in fact only visited very few states). Also, another positive thing is that being american gives you an easy acess to any country ( don;t have to go to the headache of applying for visas ....

i think americans are very friendly, here they give you a lot freedom, but sometimes when they are not happy or angry. they don't care for your feeling, on the other hand, we can say they are very straight. i think i would like to have both of culture which are chinese and american.....

Hi everyone! I`m Khanh Tran. Honestly, I think Americans are friendly and independent. They also have self-confidence which I desire to be. However, they`re sometimes so selfish that I think it is a negative thing of being an American. They just care for themseves first that make me sometimes wonder how could they do it even they do the same way with their families. I did ask a few American friends " why" and they said " it is the way I am; it is Americans` culture. I notice that people around the world from coast to coast have both negative and positive thing, so I accept the way they are and want to be Vietnamese American which mean get the positive thing as my life skills and avoid the negative one. Thanks!

If I would say about the internal part, American is positive way of thinking. They don't look"past," always look "present" or "near future."(positive) American is very friendly at first, but it seems to be superficial.(negative) It's just my opinion that I found out through American I have met so far.
I don't desire to be American. I just want to know more about American because it's interesting to see the similarity or difference from my mind.

In my mind I think American like to change stuff, whenever the new stuff come out they just want to get it . They don't like to save money, how much they made, how much they use it. They like to say hey to everboday no matter they know you or not. but sometimes they are not mean they are friendly. they just want tell you they are nice person, do be aferid.

I think that American people are good singers. I mean they can sing very well. At the church, everyone can sing and dance as they listen to music. They know how to express their emotions. It is positive. Many Japanese people don’t know how to express their emotion, so they get a mental illness seriously. I want to be like an American in this way. I would like to express my emotion using music. That’s why I’m here, and I’m learning music.

I think "big" is a good word for American. The portion of food at restaurants is so big I always have to share one. The people have big hearts, so they are nice to new people (they have the welcome-spirit) and don't care about tiny issues. The size of clothing is bigger than Japanese ones.
To me, if I were considered American because of my English, it would be definitely positive. Other than that, I don't want to be considered to be American because I have a pride being Japanese. Therefore, I do not desire to be American
